3 simple science experiments with balloons everyone should do at least once. #1 Pop a balloon with orange zest When we squeeze orange peeling, a substance is sprayed around. That liquid is called limonene and it easily breaks latex of the balloon causing it to pop. We took this experiment a step further. After trying it on smaller sized balloons, we tried to see if the same would work on bigger balloons. And sure it did! This is a great experiment with balloons to try with the kids at home. It is easy science for children you can try at home :) #2 Make a balloon kebab Fancy a Balloon Kebab? Then you have come to the right place. Today we will show you how to make a Balloon Kebab. Yes it is made out of balloons! It's not possible - you may say. Well it is! With the help of some clever science. If someone told you they could stick a sharp object through a balloon without popping it, you wouldn't believe them would you? But it is possible. Amaze your family and friends by making a genuine balloon kebab. You will need: balloons a wooden kebab skewer vegetable oil Step 1: Blow up a balloon to about half of its full size, and tie a knot in the neck. Step 2: Hold the balloon in one hand and the kebab skewer in the other. Step 3: Poke the point of the skewer into the balloon, near the knot. Wipe a little vegetable oil o the skewer, so that the skewer slides in smoothly. Step 4: Push the skewer through the balloon very gently, twisting as you push. Aim to make it come out on the opposite side, at the middle of the top of the balloon. Step 5: If you have a long skewer or small balloons, try to add more balloons - like a kebab! How does it work? Usually, when a balloon is stabbed with a kebab skewer, the rubber skin will tear and it will pop. That is because the pressurised air inside the balloon is stretching the skin very tight, so that the slightest hole blows open in an instant. However, the skin is not as tight at the "ends" of a balloon. So stabbing it there won't pop it - as long as you're careful. #3 Inflate a balloon without blowing it You need vinegar, baking soda, plastic bottles and balloons. Use a funnel to add 1/3 cup baking soda to the inside of a balloon. Fill a plastic bottle with approximately 1 cup vinegar. Attach the balloon to the mouth of the plastic bottle, then lift the balloon upright so the baking soda falls and causes the reaction.
