DIY Toy: Paper Cup Hippo

DIY Toy: Paper Cup Hippo

Let's craft a cute hippo toy! By changing the tension on the string, we can open the mouth of our hungry hippo a little for a small snack, or huge for a great big dinner! You can take the idea further and use this technique to create other animals. MATERIALS:⠀ - Paper cups - Coloured paper - String - Glue - Pencil - Scissors INSTRUCTIONS: (1) On the first paper cup, we're going to want the cup to be able to fold in half. To achieve this, draw two vertical lines on either side of the paper cup. The lines should touch the bottom, but not the top rim. (2) Using these lines, make two semi-circles so that they're joined together. It should look like you have two 'U's that are connected. On the bottom of the cup, draw a small circle near the top of a 'U' that you string could pass through. (3) Cut out around the 'U's, be sure to also cut on those vertical lines. Cut out or pierce the hole on the bottom. Gently fold the bottom. (4) Cut out and glue on a tongue, eyes, teeth and ears. (5) Take a string, and thread it through the hole. Glue it to the top of your hippo's mouth. That's the head! (6) On your second paper cup, draw a triangle on the bottom of the cup that touches all the sides. Draw a small circle near the top rim on the side. Cut these out. (7) Thread the string through the triangle, and then through the hole. Tie it off and add a paper tab. Glue the head into the triangle hole. Your puppet is done!
