Tips for Parents

Here's how to talk to your child about it
The Sun is very far away but still gives us warmth and light. It's too hot to touch, so we can't go visit it.

4 activities you can do with your child now
- Discuss the concept of distance by asking your child to compare the distance between The Sun and Earth to the distance between objects in their room. - Engage in a hands-on activity by creating a scale model of the solar system using different sized objects to represent the planets and The Sun. - Encourage critical thinking by asking your child to come up with their own questions about space and The Sun, and then researching the answers together. - Foster creativity by providing art supplies for your child to draw or paint their own interpretation of The Sun and the solar system.

Pretend play with your child
GAME: "Sun Spotter" INSTRUCTIONS: Take your child outside on a sunny day. Ask them to guess how close they think the Sun is and explain that you'll play a game to find out. Have them close one eye and hold up their thumb, then guide them to use their thumb to measure the distance between objects (e.g. a tree, a car) and the Sun. The closer the object appears to the Sun, the farther away it actually is. Discuss the results and explain the concept of distance in space.
