Impact of the 1991 Mount Pinatubo Eruption

The eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines on June 15, 1991, was the second largest of the 20th century, sending ash 28 miles into the sky and spreading debris for hundreds of miles. Thanks to early warnings from scientists, over 250,000 people were evacuated, though the eruption still destroyed homes and caused nearly 847 deaths. The explosion affected the whole planet, cooling global temperatures by 1°F for over a year, and scientists continue to monitor the volcano today for any signs of future activity.
