His friends Lindsey and Suzy then come along to help show Rob how to find sums and differences, and finally describe that the equals spaces on a number line can be called intervals. The group of friends ends their lesson by sitting underneath the lights of the Milky Way and see a magical message appear before their very eyes… watch to find out what it says! • Here’s how to talk to your child about it

After watching the video, you learned that numbers can be represented on a number line and used to add and subtract. You also learned that the spaces between the numbers are called intervals.

  • Some activities you can do with your child now

    – Have your child practice counting from 1 to 9 on a number line diagram, marking each number with equally spaced points.
    – Extend the number line to 10, 20, 30, and so on, and have your child identify each number.
    – Create addition problems using the number line, such as “jumping” from one number to another to find the sum.
    – Practice subtraction by “jumping back” on the number line to find the difference between two numbers.

  • Pretend play with your child

    GAME: Number Line Jump

Instructions: Parent (you) and child (profile_name) take turns being “Rob” and “Mom”. Use a number line (drawn or imaginary) and markers to represent the numbers. Start at 0 and take turns adding or subtracting numbers based on the video. Jump forward or backward to find the sum or difference. The goal is to reach a specific number or solve a math problem. Have fun jumping on the number line!

Note: Use the term “interval” to describe the spaces between each mark on the number line.

  • 1 take away from the video for your child

“Moral Lesson: Learning how to add and subtract on a number line teaches us how to track distances and find sums and differences. It also shows us the importance of persistence and the value of intervals.”
