Sending a GoPro to SPACE with the Cub-Scouts (High Altitude Balloon)

My friend Joe and Coyt invited me to come hangout and watch the cub scouts launch a high altitude balloon for their engineering pin. Greg, one of the pack leaders, designed a GPS receiver that transmits data over amateur radio frequencies. Amature radio frequencies have a very long range, so our signal was able to be picked up by any station within line-of-sight, even at 100,000 feet! The balloon popped at 106,000 feet and landed 145 miles away from our launch. The kids had a great time, and it was a great adventure to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
