Tips for Parents

  • Here's how to talk to your child about it

You learned that Thanksgiving is a special holiday where families come together to eat delicious food like turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. It's a wonderful thing to celebrate and enjoy with loved ones.

  • Some activities you can do with your child now

    - Have a discussion with your child about their favorite Thanksgiving food and why they like it. - Encourage your child to draw a picture of their favorite Thanksgiving dish and explain why they chose it. - Help your child create a Thanksgiving menu by cutting out pictures of different foods from magazines and gluing them onto a paper. - Play a game where you name different Thanksgiving foods and your child has to act out how they would eat it.

  • Pretend play with your child

GAME: "Thanksgiving Food Match" Instructions: Place picture cards of different Thanksgiving foods facedown on a table. Take turns flipping over two cards to find a match. If a match is made, say something you are thankful for related to that food. If not, flip the cards back over and it's the next player's turn. The player with the most matches and thankful statements wins! Example: Flip over a turkey card and a mashed potato card. Say, "I'm thankful for turkey because it brings our family together."
