Tips for Parents

  • Here's how to talk to your child about it

You learned that a food web consists of interconnected food chains in an ecosystem, organisms are grouped into trophic levels (producers, consumers, decomposers), consumers are split into four types (omnivores, herbivores, scavengers, carnivores), humans are part of the food web as primary and secondary consumers, and there are four types of decomposers (fungi, insects, earthworms, bacteria).

  • Some activities you can do with your child now

    - Discuss with your child the concept of a food web and ask them to name different living things that might be part of a food chain. - Take a walk outside and point out examples of producers, such as plants, and consumers, such as birds or insects. - Play a game where you categorize different animals as herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores based on what they eat. - Set up a small composting bin at home and teach your child about the important role decomposers play in breaking down organic waste.

  • Pretend play with your child

GAME: Food Web Challenge Instructions: In this game, you and your child will take turns being different organisms in a food web. Start by identifying the three trophic levels - producers, consumers, and decomposers. Each of you will choose an organism from one of these levels and describe what it eats or decomposes. Take turns connecting your chosen organisms to create a food chain. The goal is to create the longest and most complex food chain possible. Have fun exploring the interconnectedness of the food web!

"Every living thing is connected in a food web. We all rely on each other for energy and nutrients. Remember, we are all part of a bigger picture."
