Deborah Sampson, born in 1760, disguised herself as a man to fight in the Revolutionary War. Facing early financial struggles, she educated herself and enlisted as Robert Shurtleff. For over 18 months, she served in the military, undertaking missions and leading soldiers while concealing her identity. After being discovered due to illness, she received an honorable discharge, becoming the first woman recognized for military service.
