In some situations, we want to estimate the volume of liquid in a container that is not marked by a liter scale. We can use a known benchmark, such as a bottle of milk that contains about 1-liter of liquid and then see how many bottles of milk we can fill with that liquid. The total number of filled bottles will be equal to the number of liters of that liquid.
